In 2014, Andi Dorfman’s season of The Bachelorette faced an ethical issue on real-life vs. production turf when one of its contestants, Eric Hill, was killed in a paragliding accident very shortly after his exit from the show, while the final episodes were still being shot. To make things more complicated, Hill was an early front-runner who also had an early flameout by committing the Bachelor sin of questioning where real life ended and production began, telling the Bachelorette that he saw “two different sides of Andi,” and that “little glimpses of you, like the real you . . . that’s the Andi I like.” In a heart-to-heart gone awry, Eric secures his exit when he declares, “I came on this to meet a person, not a TV actress.”

Even had Hill not died, this confrontation alone leads to an unveiling of the conditions of the show’s production. “Do you feel like you’ve been comfortable and natural the whole time?” Eric asks Andi. Her response:
